We attended Beamish Museum’s celebration of Flag and Empire Day in May 2018. The event is a celebration of the commitment and effort our young people put into to the various organisations they are part of including their school. This year our group of volunteers proudly waved our school flag and our new Dementia Friendly flag as we help our local community become more dementia aware. We had a beautiful sunny day to march alongside hundreds of children and young people from schools, cadets, cubs, guides, brownies, scouts and rainbows.
Japanese culture morning
Pupils across Key Stage Two were very fortunate to spend the morning alongside Japanese students who taught them a whole range of things about their culture. The children loved dressing up, trying chopsticks, creating origami, calligraphy and learning some Japanese words and phrases. In exchange, the students were improving their English for teaching young people. A great morning of learning for everyone!
Durham Primary Dance Festival 2018
Wow! Our Key Stage Two dancers stole the show at the Durham Primary Dance Festival to end the term with a bang! Our routine to ‘This is Me’ from The Greatest Showman had the audience screaming and cheering with delight. That was after an awesome display by Year Six to ‘Ego’ which scooped the award for most original routine. Well done to all- you were AMAZING!
Beamish with Year 1
To finish off their history topic on coalmining, Year One finally got to visit Beamish Museum after two cancellations due to snow! It was worth the wait, however, as Year One showed off their learning both in the coalmine itself and in the surrounding pit village. They loved riding on the tram and visiting the Victorian sweet shop (they weren’t so keen on the dentist afterwards!)
Sport Relief 2018
What a fantastic effort made for Sport Relief 2018! We raised over £350 through a day of healthy activity and a coffee morning for the grown-ups. From our two-year-olds to eleven-year-olds everyone joined in with a carousel of sports and games including: javelin, netball, hockey, long-distance running and the floor is lava! Well done everyone- you thoroughly deserve your wristbands.
Robin Wood 2018
March 2018 saw 29 adventurous pupils (and 4 teachers!) set off for Robin Wood Outdoor Education Centre in Alston, Cumbria. The weekend long break included many activities such as climbing, canoeing, caving, zip-wire, obstacle course and, everyone’s favourite- The Giant Swing!
Our pupils were impeccably behaved throughout and Robin Wood staff made many comments over the three days about their conduct, manners, behaviour and support for each other.
As Robin Wood no longer provide weekend breaks, next year we are making the move to Derwent Hill in Keswick. Who’s coming with us?
World Book Day 2018
We could not let the Beast from the East spoil our World Book Day fun! We celebrated a week later than planned with a day of coming to school as our favourite story characters. From Paddington to Peter Rabbit, Wonderwoman to Wally and Mrs Twit to Mary Poppins, we had them all. Well done to all of our children for their brilliant efforts to bring the world of stories to life. Don’t forget to spend your book tokens very soon and add to your own collections of books.
Olympic medallist, Amy Tinkler, comes to school!
We were thrilled to host a morning with Amy Tinkler in school in February 2018. To celebrate both her Olympic bronze in Rio, and her selection for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Australia, Amy came along to teach the children all about the power of support in sport. Team England sponsors, NPower, teamed up with Amy to present medals to all of the children in assembly. Amy then went on to help coach our budding young gymnasts in our recently formed gymnastics club.
For our children to meet a medal-winning Olympian, who is also a local girl, shows them that aiming high and working hard can propel you to the highest heights. We’ll all be behind you in Australia, Amy!
Dance Assembly 2018
Pupils from 2-11 years old took part in our annual dance assembly in spring 2018. Once again, it was one of the most well-attended events of the year and we had a whole load of fun developing our dances through PE lessons to be ready to perform. We can’t wait to show two of our performances at the Durham Primary Dance Festival later in the term.
The Fairy Queen
Pupils in Years 4, 5 and 6 had a wonderful opportunity this spring to perform with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in Durham Cathedral. They spent a few weeks practising The Fairy Queen, based on the story of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the music of Henry Purcell, before the performance, in Durham Cathedral, took place on 7th February.
Here are some images of our final performance:
