Our friends from the NSPCC came in to talk to us about our right to a safe and happy childhood. We learned about different types of abuse and how this is not acceptable and never the victim’s fault. We talked about how worries can make us feel and that there are always trusted adults we can talk to who can help us. We also learned the phone number for childline, a free service available to offer a listening ear to worried children- 0800 1111
Poppy tribute to mark 100 years since armistice
Tributes to mark 100 years since the end of World War One took place up and down the country in 2018. West Rainton Primary School made sure its pupils marked the occasion with a carpet of poppies created from recycled plastic. Our display looked stunning along with the silhouette statue of Tommy, on loan from our local history group. We held our own service of remembrance before surprising the residents of Springfield Lodge by taking our poppy carpet along to their front garden.
We will remember them.
Welcome- the year of the pig!
An important event within our school calendar is the celebration of Chinese New Year. 2019 marks the start of the year of the pig and our children love hearing the story about how the Chinese calendar became dedicated to certain animals. We had a special Chinese lunch with fortune cookies before performing a dragon dance for our community. We even danced the dragon all the way to nursery’s stay and play day and to Springfield Lodge residential home.
A miracle for all ages
This year, we were delighted to work in partnership with the residents and staff of Springfield Lodge residential home to perform a joint Nativity play for our community in St Mary’s church. As part of our dementia friendly action plan, we spent valuable time learning from, and about, each other as we rehearsed. The event was one of the highlights of our Christmas.
Wear It Pink Day
The final day of the half term was a thoroughly pink day as we raised money for the charity, Breast Cancer Now, who work to research treatment methods. We raised an amazing £250 with a non-uniform day and cake sale. Thanks to everyone who contributed.
Happy Harvest Festival
Pupils in Reception and Y6 worked together to put on a beautiful harvest assembly for our families in autumn. The whole school collected a table full of traditional harvest goodies to share with our neighbours. This year we were also able to send two huge boxes of toiletries to help out ward E56 at Sunderland Royal hospital. Thank you for your kind donations.
