The Year 5 pupils enjoyed a fabulous visit to the Safety Carousel in March 2015. They took part in six different activities based on safety. There were a few surprises as well! Great interest was displayed by all of our pupils, and the adults learnt a thing or two as well! Well done to Year 5 for your outstanding behaviour throughout the day.
Mothers’ Day at Springfield Lodge
It was lovely to once again celebrate Mothers’ Day with the residents of our village nursing home. The thrity-one ladies greatly appreciated the flowers and cards that were personalised for them. All of the residents thoroughly enjoyed the concert of Easter and Mothers’ Day songs too, with many singing and clapping along to ‘Lord of the Dance’ and ‘Oh when the Saints’.
All of this after a special assembly for all of the special ladies of the school community the day before which was attended by over eighty people! Wow! Happy Mothers’ Day ladies!
Bring your adult to school day!
What a great turnout we had for our first ‘bring your adult to school day!’ Over 70% of our families were represented across the afternoon as parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles joined us for crash courses in the basic skills of reading, spelling and maths before helping us to create our Easter crafts for our upcoming fair.
Thank you so much for supporting the children in this event and we hope you will join us again soon for similar activity days.
World Book Day 2015
A great time was had by all on World Book Day in March 2015. Staff and children made a huge effort to celebrate all of our favourite characters and inspirational authors. The characters seen in school today included: Willy Wonka, Little Red Riding Hood, Dorothy, George (complete with marvellous medicine!) and Harry Potter.
Reception loved seeing the Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf after producing some fantastic wirintg recently about the traditional fairytale. It was also great to have Goldilocks, Salazar Slytherin and characters from Frozen in school for the day too!
West Rainton Primary are Runners Up in High 5 Netball League!
Congratulations on beating off a lot of competition to finish runners up in the High Five Netball league run by Durham School Sports Partnership. Your attitudes and skill throughout the league event have been admirable and you have proven yourselves to be fabulous ambassadors for our school.
Well done team for a fabulous start to our netball participation! We are very proud of you all!
A visit from SAFC stars
Through our links with SAFC Foundation we were very fortunate to have some special visitors to school recently.
Vito Mannone, Anthony Reveillere, Billy Jones and Carl Lawson joined in PE with class 3 before taking part in a Q&A with the whole school. There was just enough time to get some fabulous photographs before our friends left.
Tesco trips for the whole school!
Each of our classes have enjoyed a trip to the Tesco Extra in Durham this term. Each class had a different task to do, from bread making to sandwich making.
The people at Tesco were exceptionally kind to us all, and it is clear that we all now know much more about the ways in which food is sourced for our supermarkets. Thanks Tesco!
West Rainton and Leamside Village Show 2014
We were so proud to show off our artwork to the local community in the annual village horticultural and art show.
Every pupil in the school entered two pieces of work and the judges had a terrible time deciding on winners and commendations.
Well done to everyone for taking part. You had everyone talking about how wonderful our school is yet again!
Banner Launch is the proudest day of the year
We were so proud to see our mining heritage project come to a fantastic and fitting end with our banner launch events. The project, which was made possible through a Heritage Lottery Fund grant, involved the entire school and the wider community.
The banner was launched in its own community on the big lunch day when it was proudly paraded from school to St Mary’s stopping off at Sprigfield Lodge. West Rainton and Leamside were then placed firmly back on the mining heritage map when the banner made its debut at Durham Miners Gala.
It was overwhelming that so many members of our community were able to join us for the Cathedral blessing- a day that will go down in history.
